The 1st settlers arrived in the new colony in March 1634. Leonard Calvert, the first provincial governor of Maryland was one of the settlers. Maryland was founded with the objective of offering religious toleration of England’s Catholic minority.
From the 1950s to the present, Maryland has experienced tremendous population growth particularly in he Baltimore and Washington, DC. Suburbs. Agricultural lands gave way to residential areas. Heavy manufacturing industries declined after the 2nd World War. The 4 westernmost counties, industrial, railroad and coal mining jobs also went down. On the lower Eastern Shore, many family farms were bought and replaced with large-scale poultry farms and vegetable farms. In an effort to halt depopulation due to the decline of the working-class industries, Baltimore spearheaded an urban renewal movement that began in the 1960s with Charles Center and the Baltimore World Trade Center.
