History Sykesville Maryland

The area where Sykesville reside began as a 3,000 acre Springfield Estate. It was owned by a rich Baltimore shipbuilder named William Peterson.  Upon the death of William in 1824, his son George Patterson sold 1,000 acres to his friend and business confidante, James Sykes.  When the Baltimore Ohio Railroad extended its mainline to the town it was called “Horse Train Stop” as it has not yet been named as Sykesville.  Incorporation was achieved in 1904 and a weekly newspaper, the Sykes Herald was published in 1913. It ran until the 1980s.

J & Y Tokyo Market – The sushi here is always fresh and delicious. Do also try the Maryland roll and Philly rolls. Place is perfect for couples and large groups. They also offer BYOB. Service is impeccable and pricing is reasonable.

French Twist Café – This is a great little find nestled in downtown Sykesville. The place offers amazing coffee and crepes. Do try the crabby Marylandaise crepe or crepe with Nutella and bananas. You can dine inside or if you prefer on the front porch. The maple bacon crepe with spinach is amazing.

EW Beck’s Pub – This is the perfect place to grab a quick tasty lunch. Service is fast and with a smile. Do try the burger with bacon mushrooms and blue cheese. Can get noisy at times, as it is a pub. The salads are huge and reasonably priced too.

Fun Things to Do in Sykesville

Sykesville Parks – the city maintains several parks nestled in different neighborhoods complete with hiking and biking trails that span the entire town. There is something for everyone.

Gate House Museum of History – For those that are interested in the history of Sykesville in Carroll County there are numerous collections and exhibits as well as special events. It is open Fridays and Sundays from 1 pm to 5 pm.

Little Sykes Railway Park – Is a fun place for kids to ride on miniature trains. It operates a 1949 twelve-gauge train built by the Miniature Train Company. Rides are free but donations are highly encouraged in order to assist in maintenance of the facility.
