History of Annapolis, Maryland

During the 17th century, Annapolis resembled a village community but grew rapidly for the most part of the 18th century.  Up until the American Revolution it was the political and administrative capital and a port of entry for the Atlantic slave trade. The Maryland Gazette, an important weekly journal was founded here. During this time water trades like oyster packing, sail making and boat building were considered as the main industries. When the Treaty of Paris was signed in 1783, Annapolis became the temporary capital of the United States. It was here where General George Washington resigned his commission as commander-in-chief of the Continental Army.
